In response to God’s Presence

Matthew 17:5-7 (New American Standard Bible)

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, (A)a voice out of the cloud said, "(B)This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!"

6When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified.

7And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, "Get up, and (C)do not be afraid."

Accidentally falling backwards – in response to God’s power

New International Version (NIV)
"I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
John 18:5-7 (in Context) John 18 (Whole Chapter)

The Acts reference (Acts 9:4-8) is to Paul's Damascus Road experience, where Saul was blinded (v.8) by light from heaven (v.3) and fell to the ground, probably from the shock of what had happened to him. His fellow travelers heard the voice, but saw nothing except Saul's reactions and blindness. Paul recounts this experience before the Jews in Jerusalem, in Acts 22, and again before Agrippa in Acts 26.

The Revelation reference (Revelation 1:17) was of John, the writer of the Revelation, speaking of the vision which gave him the messages to the churches in Asia Minor. This vision was one of seeing the glorified Christ in His full heavenly setting. It is said in the Old Testament that the sight of God is too much for humans to take. John, at least in this vision, got to see the most see-able part of divinity, that of Jesus, but in the heavenly setting, even that much was too much, and John fell at His feet "like a dead man". Then, Christ laid His hand on him, to calm his fears.

Laughter

1.       Genesis 21:6
Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."
Genesis 21:5-7 (in Context) Genesis 21 (Whole Chapter)

2.       A time for (Ecclesiastes 3:4)

Holy Laughter

You may find 3 types of laughter:  Holy, Demonic, and regular.  I like the Holy Laughter.  Regular is fun too.  Either is fine by me in church, done decently and in order.

Psalm 126

New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 126

A song of ascents.

1 When the LORD restored the fortunes of[a] Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.
[b]
2 Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
3 The LORD has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.

 4 Restore our fortunes,[c] LORD,
   like streams in the Negev.
5 Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
   carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
   carrying sheaves with them.

Footnotes:

a.       Psalm 126:1 Or LORD brought back the captives to

b.       Psalm 126:1 Or those restored to health

c.        Psalm 126:4 Or Bring back our captives

A close look at the footnotes of this passage intimates that true Holy laughter can:

  1. Deliver –brings captives back home from a place of captivity (a and c)
  2. Heal – restore to health (b)

I can testify to healings from hopelessness (depression) by holy laughter.  It may be an infusion of serotonin to restore balance.  People who are laughing may be getting healed of a chemical imbalance or they may be just enjoying themselves.  In either case, who are we to judge?

Drunkenness

 Jeremiah 23:9
Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me; all my bones tremble. I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORD and his holy words.
Jeremiah 23:8-10 (in Context) Jeremiah 23 (Whole Chapter)

FALSELY ACCUSED OF » The Apostles (Acts 2:13-15)

1 Samuel 1:12-16 (New International Version)

12 As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, "How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine."

15 "Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."

Ephesians 5:18
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:17-19 (in Context) Ephesians 5 (Whole Chapter)

"Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than when the grain and new wine abound." PS 4:7

Sometimes people seem drunk when they are really worshipping God, or moved by the Holy Spirit.  However, staying constantly “drunk in the spirit” for days, months, and even years at time seems excessive and disorderly.  The bible speaks of a time for (Ecclesiastes 3:4) laughing.  Submit to local church leadership toward propriety in worship.

Conclusion

I encourage you to “eagerly desirethe more gifts of the Spirit.  One of these gifts is a “discernment of spirits”.  Test everything (1 Thessalonians 5:20-22):

New International Version (NIV)
[ Test the Spirits ] Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 John 4:1-3 (in Context) 1 John 4 (Whole Chapter)

Remember that the purpose of the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit is to strengthen the Church in its obedient pursuit of the great commission.  Seeking the gifts at the expense of obedience can open one up to other spirits.  The devil offers a counterfeit of that which God also offers.
